Cities are the habitat of the 21st century! More than half of humanity now lives in urban centers, is responsible for 75 % of global energy consumption and causes 80 % of all greenhouse gas emissions. As the engines driving future growth, cities take on growing economic importance and play a crucial role in development, employment and prosperity. At the same time, however, the special needs of cities present humanity with enormous challenges by increasingly pushing them to the limits of their growth. Energy efficiency and sustainability for buildings, transportation, energy and water supply are therefore urgently needed and are becoming more and more important. They are the only way we can preserve respectively further improve the quality of life in cities, secure competitive strength and protect the environment. A sustainable urban infrastructure can improve humanity's "ecological footprint" by as much as 70 %.
